| EISERNES KREUZ 1939 Klasse 1 - Iron Cross 1939 1stClass, L/26, 44x44mm, magnetic core, 100% enamel intact, frosted ribbing, perfectly intact, natural patina has dulled the frosting by 10% or less, the frame is made from neu-silber and is nearly stone mint condition. One pin-point, less than 1mm, blemish is noted between the base and end of the right hook of the swastika. The reverse is also mildly speckled with pin-point blemishes, three at most to my eyes. The attachment pin bears the numbers "26" laterally at the center of the pin, recessed inside a rectangle. The attachment pin is finished with a very bright silvery finish. Maker "26" was LDO maker B.H. Mayer, Pforzheim. Near Mint! | $425.00 | | 3441 | | EISERNES KREUZ 1939 1. KLASSE - Iron Cross 1939 1st Class, 44x44mm, 20.98 grammes, maker "65,"Klein & Quenzer, A.G. Odar/Oberstein," silver frame, cross is vaulted. No visible marks from bending the four arms. Magnetic iron core, wear to the obverse is only noted on the swastika which is the highest point. Dark patina is noted around the entire frame. The reverse shows dark spotting along with a dark patina. The attachment pin is bent along with the silver wire catch. These can be straightened by a jeweller if desired. This badge has definitely seen battle wear. In average condition, but hard to find. | $345.00 | | 336 | | EISERNES KREUZ 1939 Kl. 2 - Iron Cross 1939 2nd Class, Maker Marked #98, Rudolf Souval, Wien, 44.5x44.5mm, weight 17.56 grammes, silver frame, heavy patina, magnetic iron core, with all black finish on both sides. Ribbon was sewn into the tunic. Ribbon ring WWI large style, uncut. A beautiful, stunning Iron Cross with superb detail. | $165.00 | | 776 | | 1939 EISERNES KREUZ 2. KLASSE - ÜBERGRÖßE - Over-sized IronCross 1939 2nd Class, 47x47mm, 22.79 gr., unmarked, magnetic core, finish completely intact, beautiful frosted ribbing, 14mm original ribbon. There are theories as to why this very rare Iron Cross was made. The example next to the Übergröße is a marked Rudolf Souval "98", the standard dimensions being 44x44mm. This particular example measures 44.5x44.5mm and weighs 17.55 grammes, iron core construction and a silver frame; a highly collectable piece on its own. Curiously, the Over-sized Cross is but 1mm short of the measurement standard of a Knights Cross of the Iron Cross whose standard measurement is 48x48mm. Some suggest the Over-sized EKII at 47x47mm may have been a prototype for the Knight's Cross. Quoting "The Iron Cross" by Gordon Williamson, pages 66-67, "Examination of several examples revealed slightly differing dimensions and weights suggesting that they were manufactured by more than one firm. That examples exist which came direct from German veterans suggests that whatever the original intention, they were ultimately added to stocks of regulation Second Classes and used as normal issue pieces." This extra-large EKII is for all intensive purposes an absolutely beautiful Iron Cross worthy of any collector. Hard to find!
